Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Alex graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a concentration in euphonium performance. He is certified to teach music PreK-12, and is currently teaching band at Arendtsville and Bendersville Elementary Schools in the Upper Adams School District. Prior to this position he taught in the Christina School District in Newark, DE, as well as in the Downingtown and Bermudian Springs School Districts in PA, and worked for J.W. Pepper and Son, Inc.
Alex completed his student teaching in the Mechanicsburg Area School District, and has worked as the low brass and field tech for the Downingtown West High School Marching Band, and a substitute teacher in the Downingtown Area School District. He also teaches private trombone, euphonium, and piano lessons. He has had several other teaching opportunities in field placements in the Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, and York County public schools, as well as at the Billrothstrasse Gymnasium in Vienna, Austria, during his time abroad. While at Gettysburg, Alex performed in the Wind Symphony, where he appeared as both a soloist and student conductor, the Bullets Marching Band and Drum Line, where he served as the equipment manager and office staff, the College Choir, the Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Gamelan Angklung Gita Semara, several instrumental studios and chamber ensembles, and a student-run all-male a capella group called Drop the Octave. In addition to musical activities, Alex served as a class representative for the Sunderman Student Advisory Council, acting as a liaison between the students and faculty within the Conservatory. Alex is passionate about research, and has worked in conjunction with Dr. Brent C. Talbot conducting research in Bali, Indonesia on meaning-making and participation structures within ensembles. They presented this research at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Conference in April of 2017, and the MayDayGroup International Colloquium in June of 2017. He has also conducted research with four of his peers that explored marginalization and privilege in public schools, and presented this research at the Symposium for Music Teacher Educators (SMTE) in Greensboro, North Carolina, in September of 2015. Alex is a member of several professional organizations, including: Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association (PMEA), American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), and the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA). He is also a member of several academic honor societies, including: Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society.
Alex studied abroad in Vienna, Austria, in the spring of 2016, and is very passionate about traveling in order to acquire a broader perspective of the world we live in. Outside of teaching and doing musical activities, Alex enjoys hiking, running, swimming, snow skiing, water skiing, doing triathlons, and riding his unicycle.
