Alex is currently teaching 4th-6th grade band at Arendtsville and Bendersville Elementary Schools in the Upper Adams School District, and is the assistant director of the marching band at Biglerville High School. Prior to this position he taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade choir, 6th grade general music, and keyboarding / piano skills at George V. Kirk Middle School in Newark, DE. He also worked as the Long-Term Substitute Choral and General Music Teacher at Bermudian Springs Middle School, and as a Substitute Teacher in the Downingtown Area School District, teaching five sections of general music, and conducting two choirs. In addition, he worked with the Downingtown West High School Marching Band as a Low Brass Instructor and Field Tech.
Alex completed his student teaching placements in the Mechanicsburg Area School District in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. At the secondary level, he worked with the concert band, symphonic band, and jazz band, and teaching AP music theory classes at Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School, as well as the 7th and 8th grade bands at Mechanicsburg Area Middle School. At the elementary level, he taught General Music grade 1-5 and fifth grade choir at Shepherdstown and Upper Allen Elementary Schools. Prior to student teaching, he has had various collaborative placements working with music teachers in the Gettysburg Area School District, Conewago Valley School District, Upper Adams School District, and Bermudian Springs School District, among others.
Alex also has experience teaching outside of the United States. While studying abroad in Vienna, Austria, Alex applied for and received a teaching internship at the Billrothstrasse Gymnasium. In this position, he taught high school music history, middle school band, and elementary general music, in English and in German. The accompanying seminar he participated in explored the Austrian school system, with a focus on providing educational resources for the influx of Syrian refugees in Austria and the surrounding countries. He has also visited and observed several schools in Nicaragua, and Bali, Indonesia.
In June of 2015, Alex worked with the Gettysburg Children's Choir as the summer intern during their summer choir camp. During this time, Alex worked with directors Matt Carlson and Dr. Brent C. Talbot, assisting and leading rehearsals, conducting, and accompanying pieces on the concert.
While at Gettysburg, Alex served as a Peer Learning Associate for several classes, including Social Foundations of Music Education, Teaching Students with Diverse Needs, and Music Theory levels I-III, offering tutoring labs for students who needed extra review, facilitating discussions in and out of class, and providing feedback on student's work. Alex also teaches private euphonium, trombone, and piano lessons, working with a variety of students from beginners to intermediate players.
