Philosophy of Classroom Management: An effective classroom environment is one that is co-constructed and grounded in mutual respect; a supportive environment in which every student feels comfortable and confident expressing themselves and sharing their ideas. Respect from the students is only earned if the educator incorporates an engaging curriculum and displays genuine empathy and consideration for the needs of their students while challenging them to bring forth their best. During the process in which this ideal environment is being co-constructed, or in the case of extenuating circumstances, some classroom management procedures or disciplinary actions may be necessary, but these should be mutually agreed upon by students and teacher alike at the start of the school year, and reinforced through peer mentoring. Only in the most extreme of situations should a student be removed from the classroom, and even then, this would be in the best interest of the student. I expect my students to put forth their best in everything they do, and by making these behavioral and educational expectations very clear right from the start, maximum learning and music making can occur. |
