Teaching Philosophy:
I do music because, in the words of Victor Hugo, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” All humans are born with innate musical abilities, and doing music gives every person an opportunity to create, move, and express their voice. Teaching is a collaborative and interactive process in which the creativity and identity of every student is valued and drawn upon to foster a learning environment that promotes mutual respect, inquiry, discussion, and discovery. Every student is a unique individual with unique experiences and backgrounds to bring to this learning environment. It is the responsibility of the music teacher to facilitate this conglomeration of knowledges and backgrounds to inspire a passion for music and learning in their students. Through a student-centered approach that maximizes music making, I provide building blocks that assist students in finding and constructing their own musical identities, and aim to inspire every student to participate in, or at the very least appreciate music for the rest of their lives. |
“For apart from inquiry, apart from the praxis, individuals cannot be truly human. Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other.”
